When years of email pile up, your inbox both slows down and fills up your storage quota. But you don't want to delete old mail; much of it may be needed later. The solution is archiving: keeping mail in an orderly way without deleting it and lightening your inbox.
What is archiving? Archiving means taking mail out of the inbox and moving it to a separate "Archive" area. The mail isn't deleted, it just moves away from the daily flow; you can search for and reach it whenever you want.
Archiving on the server (webmail/IMAP):
Important warning - a server archive consumes quota: Every folder on the server (including Archive) counts toward your storage quota. That is, archiving within the server organizes mail but doesn't free up space. To actually free up quota, you should create a local archive by downloading the mail to your computer.
