What Is a Static IP on a Corporate Network

An IP address is the address of every device connected to a network. On most connections the IP is assigned automatically (DHCP) and can change (dynamic). A static IP is a fixed address that doesn't change.

When do you need one?

  • Remote access: Accessing an office server, camera, or NAS from outside.
  • Your own server: Essential for a web, email, or VPN server.
  • Whitelisting: Some services allow access only from a fixed IP.
  • Uninterrupted VPN: Reliability for connections between branches.

Don't confuse the two concepts: a public static IP is a fixed address exposed to the internet (requested from us); a local static IP means assigning a fixed address to a device within the office (done from the router). Locally, use a DHCP reservation in the router panel to map a fixed IP to the device's MAC address; make sure the IP is outside the DHCP pool.
