The Basics of Network Switches and VLANs

A network switch is the fundamental networking hardware that connects the computers, servers, printers and other devices in a business to one another. Beyond a simple modem, enterprise switches manage traffic intelligently to provide performance, security and order. VLANs, in turn, are the key to logically dividing the network into segments on these switches.

Managed and Unmanaged Switches

  • Unmanaged switch: Works plug-and-play and offers no configuration. Suitable for small and simple networks.
  • Managed switch: Offers VLANs, traffic prioritization, monitoring and security features. It is indispensable for corporate networks.

What Is a VLAN?

A VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) is a method of dividing devices physically connected to the same switch into logical groups. For example, even if the accounting, production and guest networks run on the same hardware, they are isolated from one another. This way, each group behaves as if it were on its own isolated network.

The Benefits VLANs Provide

  1. Security: Departments are separated from one another; a problem in one segment does not spread to another.
  2. Performance: Unnecessary broadcast traffic is limited, and the network speeds up.
  3. Order: The network is organized logically, making it easier to manage.
  4. Flexibility: Devices can be grouped regardless of their physical location.

Traffic Prioritization (QoS)

Managed switches can prioritize critical traffic. For example, voice call (VoIP) or video conference traffic is given higher priority than file downloads and stays uninterrupted. This is especially important for businesses using IP telephony.

Proper Design

A good network design addresses switch capacity, VLAN structure and future growth together. An improperly segmented network creates both a security vulnerability and management difficulty. Cabling, switch and VLAN structure must be planned as a whole.
